Why Do Geysers Burst? How A Pipe Can Stop Geyser Burst?

Water Boilers or Water Heaters are the most common equipment used in Indian houses to heat the water, especially in winter. We’ve always heard about the incidents where geysers burst. A heater pipeline burst is another common incident that has come to notice. But what can be the main reason behind the bursting of water boilers and heaters? Before knowing why does geysers burst, Let’s first know about a very important equipment inside the geyser:

There is a device in every heater or can be called as a sensor that helps to regulate the temperature of a heater. It basically guides the geyser of the temperature up to which it should boil the water, and once the water reaches that temperature, this sensor automatically switches off the geyser. You can find this sensor in other heating equipment such as iron used to get rid of the wrinkles from your clothes, electrical kettles used to heat liquid of any kind. This sensor inside the electric heater is called a “Thermostat”. Every geyser has a water heating range from 35 Deg. C to 75 Deg. C which is the maximum it can go.

Working of a Thermostat:

Now that we know about the heating range of a heater which is from 35 Deg C to 75 Deg. C. Most of the heaters are set at 55 Deg. C because this is what a normal human body normally requires. But there are places which witness extreme cold. For such regions, heaters are built to go up to 75 Deg C.

So in simple words a geyser will only burst if the temperature inside the geyser exceeds its pressure holding capacity which means if the temperature goes above 75 Deg. C, there will be chances of casualties. Now if the sensor automatically switches the geyser off after a certain temperature, then why does the water keep on boiling and pressure increases?

Why do Geysers/Pipe Burst?

Water boiler/heater bursts when the sensor/thermostat of the geyser stops working. If the thermostat stops working, then the geyser is unable to know up to what temperature it has to boil the water. As thermostat has the capacity to turn off the geyser automatically after certain temperature is reached, when this sensor breaks down, the temperature keeps on boiling even after reaching 75 Deg C. The pressure will keep on increasing inside the geyser and after reaching a certain pressure point, The geyser will burst.

There can be 3 things that can happen when the temperature exceeds the 75 Deg. C mark:

1. Connection Pipe Will Burst

If the outlet is shut off and water is not extracted, the water will keep boiling and temperature will rise. Now that temperature is increasing and there is no way for the water to escape, the water will evaporate as the temperature is very high. The steam passes from hot place to cooler place which is your inlet from where the cold water is supplied. Here if you have a GI or metal pipeline, The connection pipe will burst to release the pressure. As the temperature holding capacity of PVC connection pipe is low (70 Deg. C) and the capacity holding capacity of metal/GI pipe is very high.

2. Pipe Will Burst

If the connection pipe is also of metal? And the pipe is of CPVC? Then the CPVC pipe will burst.

3. Geyser Will Burst

The most dangerous situation is when the thermostat is not working, the connection pipe is of GI & the Inlet pipe is also of GI. Then the pressure inside the geyser will keep on increasing and ultimately the geyser will burst.

So everything rely on the proper working of a sensor, also called as thermostat. But the main question is how do we know that our thermostat is not working. We can’t wait for our geysers to burst. Is there a way by which a big tragedy can be stopped from happening?
